Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to investigate and place in context the ICRC 2018 research and publication, The roots of restraint in war, being a follow-on report from a similar 2004 publication. While viewing the empirical data and the researchers' finding, the method here takes the form of a "rejoinder". That means more than merely summarizing the contents, but more significantly placing violence and restraint in the contemporary and historical context of causes and effects in the human condition and international relations, with an eye to making sense of the future.
