Humanity at a time of inhumanity : the International Movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
The First World War and health
Leiden : Brill Nijhoff, 2020
In order to better understand the role played by the Red Cross Movement as it related to healthcare and resilience during the First World War, this contribution will provide a far from exhaustive general overview of the activities carried out by the Red Cross that contributed to the resilience of the military and civilian populations. For the sake of clarity, a first part will present the actions carried out by the national Red Cross societies from belligerent countries. Then, the special role of the Red Cross from neutral states will expand our understanding of the phenomenon. The ICRC will then be analysed in more detail, because it was during the Great War that it really began to be operational and active in the field. Finally, some thoughts on the role played by the movement linked to resilience will conclude this chapter.
