In 2018, the ICRC adopted and began implementing a new strategy to guide its operational and humanitarian diplomacy efforts to address sexual violence. The five-year strategy (2018–2022) sets the foundation for the ICRC’s work to: ensure that victims/survivors of sexual violence have access to all the services they require; enable communities and individuals to strengthen their resilience; and engage actors of influence regarding the prevention of incidents of sexual violence. During the year, ICRC delegations sustained their activities to address sexual violence in a multidisciplinary manner. Depending on the situation, the extent of the problem and the ICRC’s operational capacities in a given context, delegations either implemented activities specifically for victims/survivors of sexual violence or they sought to reach these people within the framework of broader humanitarian activities for violence-affected communities. Activities carried out by the delegations in the Central African Republic (hereafter CAR), Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (hereafter DRC), Iraq, Nigeria, South Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic (hereafter Syria) and several countries covered by the Mexico City and Suva regional delegations exemplify the ICRC’s commitment to addressing the consequences of sexual violence and helping prevent its occurrence; these activities are highlighted in this document.
