The effects on the environment of the wars of past periods have sometimes been vast and lasting, but it is only since the mid-21st century that the effort to limit the effects of war have been extended from the humanitarian field to the environmental. This paper reviews the various treaty provisions, from 1959 to 1984, that protect the environment against various types of detrimental military actions.
