Thus study on armed non-state actors (ANSAs) and displacement in armed conflict was commissioned by Geneva Call with funding from the Human Security Division of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. This research builds on a two-day conference of ANSAs and the protection of international displaced people (IDPs) organized in 2011 jointly by Geneva Call and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC). This study seeks to deepen our understanding of the interplay between ANSAs and displacement, both internal and cross-border, through an analysis of secondary interdisciplinary literature. The research also draws upon geographically diverse case studies based on past and current armed conflicts, and makes suggestions on way forward to further improve the protection of displaced people.
