Milestones in the development of international humanitarian law
Making peoples heard : essays on human rights in honour of Gudmundur Alfredsson
Leiden ; Boston : M. Nijhoff, 2011
The author reviews the milestone in the development of international humanitarian law starting from how the Red Cross came about, then the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols of 2005. He then turns to two problems to which humanitarian law has been confronted in recent years: the "global war on terror" and "asymmetrical warfare" which appear to be a problem more acute than ever. He finally moves to the prospects of humanitarian law regarding weapons of mass destruction, arms trafficking and international criminal justice and accountability.
